Poros is a small pair of Greek islands located in the southern part of the Saronic Gulf and has a surface area of around 12 miles squared. Poros consist of two islands, Sphairia is the southern part and volcanic in origin and it’s where the main city of Poros is located. Kalaureia is the northern half and the largest part of the island-pair; a bridge connects the two halves.
Although there is no airport on Poros, it is easily accessible via ferry from Athens or via hydrofoil from Galatas, which is opposite the island on the mainland of Greece. The road network here is good and the tourist faculties are improving, thus making the island-pair a great short holiday destination. Sandy beaches are mostly found along the southern shoreline, while the rest of the area is generally hilly or mountainous.
The main sights to see here include the town of Poros, which has many neoclassical buildings and its most famous landmark is the clock tower, which was built back in 1927. There is a museum at Korizis Square, which is home to the findings from the Sanctuary of Poseidon and other nearby archaeological sites. The remains of the Sanctuary of Poseidon can be found in the northern part of the island and are estimated to date back to around 520 BC. Bourtzi Castle is another must see sight; it was built around 1828 by von Heideck on the site where the old church of St. Constantine once stood.
Although this destination may not have the hub of nightlife some holiday goers crave, it certainly does have a wealth of history and other interesting sights to discover.
