Belluno is a city, which is located in the Veneto region of northern Italy; it is also the capital of the province of Belluno. It is the most important city in the Eastern Dolomites’ region; the city rises above the cliff spur where the Torrente Ardo and the Piave River meet. In the north there is the Schiara range of the Dolomites, which is home to the Gusela del Vescovà, or Bishopric's needle. In the south there are the foothills of the Alps.
The landscape itself is a major player in the city’s tourist attraction, with the mighty Dolomites looming over the city there are countless places for visitors to explore, such as Monte Antelao, Monte Civetta and Tre Cime of Lavaredo. There are also valleys, lakes, rivers and impressive waterfalls, couple this with stunning skies and breath taking sunsets and you truly have the perfect setting for a recharging holiday.
There are many buildings and places of interest to visit here and one thing that you will notice is the air of peace and calm that surrounds the city. Some of the main sights worth taking in include the Porta Dojona and Porta Rugo gates in the ancient walls that date back to medieval times.
The Bishop’s Palace dates back to 1190 and was commissioned by count-bishop Gerardo de' Taccoli, the Communal Palace is striking due to its red exterior. The Piazza del Duomo has the beautiful Fountain of San Gioatà, it was named in honour of St John the Baptist and was built in 1411.
There is also the Rector’s Palace located in Cathedral Square; the style of the building is Venetian Gothic with hints of Renaissance decorations, construction started in 1409 and was completed in 1536.
Thanks to the nearby mountains there are plenty of activities to choose from, such as Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, climbing, snowboarding, snowshoe racing, as well as hang gliding and paragliding. If you like to cycle, there are many routes to choose from and if you would rather relax and enjoy your holiday without the adrenaline, there are always the beaches by one of the lakes to retreat to.
