The southern region of Campania is one of the most popular tourist areas of Italy for one reason: Pompeii. The preserved town, buried in ash by an eruption of the nearby Mount Vesuvius, is one of the most famous historical monuments in all of Europe. Campania is also home to the cosmopolitan and bustling city of Napoli, famous for its own extensive history and its many culinary specialities, while visitors just looking for somewhere to put up their feet and relax have plenty of options among Campania's many resorts.
The Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum are “must sees” for anyone visting Campania. Herculaneum may not be as famous as its ash-covered neighbour, but it is often quieter for that very reason. When the massive eruption took place in 79 AD, many of Herculaneum's buildings were destroyed, but the artefacts within them survived. Pompeii is definitely worth visiting, if you can be bothered to fight your way through the crowds in the southern Italian heat! Preserved buildings, relics, artwork and even the ashen bodies of those who died are truly unique sights and ones that you will never forget.
One of the biggest and busiest cities in all of Italy, Napoli is full of attractions for tourists, including historical churches, ancient buildings and excavations, and an impressive collection of museums. The National Archaelogical Museum has a collection that would be the envy of anywhere in the world, with so many famous Roman sites on its doorstep; many of the artefacts found in the digs at Pompeii and Herculaneum are on display here. Fans of more modern art may prefer the Capodimonte Gallery or the Royal Palace Museum, which features works of art from the 13th to the 18th century, as well as the treasures of the Bourbon family who once ruled here. No trip to Napoli would be complete without trying some of the typical Italian meals that made the city famous; Pizza Margherita was invented in the city, and Neapolitans are convinced that theirs are the best in all Italy.
There are tourist beaches and pretty seaside towns along the length of the Campania coast, but the most popular area with visitors is the Amalfi Coast. Once home to the rich and famous, now anyone can afford to holiday here and take a tour of some of the exclusive holiday villas or just lie back on one of the private beaches that provide sun loungers and parasols. A boat trip is the best way to enjoy the scenery along this spectacular stretch of coastline, and is also the only way to visit the Emerald Grotto, where the sea water takes on a beautiful green colour.
