The island of Capri is located at the south end of the Bay of Naples, off the Sorrentine peninsula. There are several options for getting from the Italian mainland to Capri, and the journey itself is part of the attraction in visiting this famous island, which has been a holiday resort since Roman times. Ferries and hydrofoils run to Capri from most ports on the Nay of Naples, with the former taking 80 minutes to make the crossing from Naples and latter just 40 minutes.
Capri town
The capital of the island is also called Capri, and is near to the main port where most of the tourist boats and ferries arrive. Upon arrival at the Marina Grande, you can take a funicular railway up the mountain to Capri town. The town itself has an attractive old region, including the picturesque square, La Piazzetta. For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the Via Krupp is a marvel of twentieth century engineering; a footpath cut into the steep cliffs, twisting backwards and forwards to bring the walker safely to the Marina Piccola on the other side of the island. You can join the footpath at the Charterhouse of San Giacomo, a 14th century monastery, which is also open to the public.
Anacapri
The other main town on Capri is the smaller Anacapri, located in the west of the island. The Villa San Michele, which visitors will pass on their journey from Capri is one of the island’s most beautiful homes, built on the site of a palace owned by the Emperor Tiberius. It’s a bit of a climb to get to the house, but the views are spectacular and visitors are allowed in the building too. Once you get to Anacapri, most people make straight for the famous cable car, which will take you to the peak of the nearby Monte Solano, which offers even better views across the island and back to the mainland. The Blue Grotto, a few kilometres from Anacapri is one of the world’s most spectacular caves, flooded with blue light, thanks to the unique conditions. You can get to the Blue Grotto by motorboat from either of the two ports or a taxi from Anacapri. Once there you will transfer to a wooden rowing boat to make the entrance into the cave through the tiny gap. In fact, the gap is so small that you will have to lie flat on your back in the bottom of the boat in order to get through safely!
