The popular ski resort of Courmayeur enjoys one of the most stunning locations of any town in Italy; right at the foot of Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain. Whether you visit during the winter to take advantage of the excellent ski runs and lively apres-ski night-life or have travelled to this border town in Valle d'Aosta during the summer, when you can use the cable cars to enjoy views over the Alps, it is the stunning natural scenery that will leave an impression. The same slopes and cross-country ski routes that are popular while covered in snow become busy with hikers, mountain bikers and even climbers once the weather becomes warmer, while the town itself remains a picturesque Alpine village at heart, despite the expansions made necessary by the tourist industry.
The season in this part of the Alps runs from around November until April, weather permitting, and with over 100 kilometres of runs to choose from there is bound to be a route that suits your experience and abilities. From the beginner’s nursery slopes to challenging off-piste runs and cross country skiing routes to specialised jumps for snowboarders, every kind of winter sport activity is catered for in the Courmayeur area. As well as the many restaurants and bars within the town itself, there are several venues on the slopes themselves, serving traditional food in traditional mountain huts – many of which have been renovated to provide a touch of luxury! Many of these are open all year to serve not only skiers in winter but also hikers in summer.
One of the highlights of any trip to Courmayeur, in summer or winter, is the unique “crossing” of Mont Blanc. But you won't need your hiking boots or climbing equipment as the whole journey is made via cable cars and aerial tramways. Moving from one cable car to another, you end up at the Aiguille du Midi viewpoint on the French side of the border, from where the final leg of the voyage takes you to Chamonix and a bus back to Italy through the Mont Blanc tunnel. This impressive feat of engineering emerges at Courmayeur and is a fascinating end to a fascinating day trip. Other summer attractions include Mont Chétif, a much easier mountain to ascend than Mont Blanc and featuring a statue of the Virgin Mary at its peak, as well as the Giardino Botanico Alpino Saussurea, the highest botanical garden in Europe.
