Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a region in the northeastern section of Italy and it has borders with Austria, Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea, as well as the internal border with the Veneto region. Although it is the fifth smallest region, is has a wide range of landscapes and climates from Alpine continental in the north to mild Mediterranean in the south.
The region is divided into three sections; in the north it is mountainous, which includes the Carnia range and end section of the Alps, the highest peak tops out at 2,754 meters above sea level. Here there are vast pine forests and lakes and fields; this section of the region is a popular winter destination and is home to Monte Zoncolan and the Tarvisio resorts. To the southeast it is mostly hilly and here you will find the vineyards and wineries.
The rest of the region is referred to as the central and coastal plains and is itself divided into two by the Isonzo's estuary, the western side is where the shallow and sandy coast line is and where the majority of the holiday resorts and lagoons can be found. To the east the coastline rises into steep cliffs where the Carso plateau meets the sea. Here you will find underground rivers, caves and hollows.
Some of the things to do and places to see in this region include visiting the impressive Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia, the main town square in the capital of the region, Trieste. Also located in the capital there is the Miramare Castle (Castello di Miramare), Opicina Tramway, Giardino botanico Carsiana (botanic gardens) and Grotta Gigante, which is a spectacular cave.
In addition to the capital there are many other towns which have tourist attractions, such as Piancavallo’s Rampy Park, which offers a range of tracks to climb in the trees which are suitable for children aged 5 or above 1 meter in height; for adults there is no limit and there are different levels depending on your fitness and bravery levels.
