Gubbio is a town that is located in the northeastern section of the province of Perugia, in the central region of Italy, called Umbria. It is situated on the lowest slope of Mount Ingino, which is a small mountain that is part of the Apennines range.
There is a Roman Theatre, which was built in the 1st century and was made out of local limestone; it is still used during the summer months for lectures on authors and poets. There is the impressive and imposing Palazzo dei Consoli as well, which dates back to the 14th century and today houses a museum.
The cathedral was built in the 12th century and it has a striking rose window and the symbols of the Evangelists are on its sides; there is St John’s eagle, the lion for St Mark, St Matthews’ angel and St Luke’s Ox.
You can visit the Church of Santa Maria Nuova, which was built in the 13th century, but its interior is from the 14th century. The Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo is just outside the town, it has a marble altar and great windows, which depict sections of the life of St. Ubaldo who is the town’s patron saint. The Museo Cante Gabrielli housed in the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, which was once owned by the Gabrielli’s.
There is the Corsa dei Ceri, which is held every year on the first Sunday of May; it is a run that goes from the main square, up part of the mountain and finishes at the basilica of S. Ubaldo. There are three teams that run this event; they are devoted to Saint Ubaldo, Saint Giorgio and Saint Antonio. The runners wear clothing in yellow, blue and black with white trousers, red neckbands and belts. Each team has to carry a wooden statue of their saint that it is mounted on wooden prism and weighs in total around 180 kilos.
The Vivian Gabriel Oriental Collection is kept here and it has pieces from Tibetan, Nepalese, Indian and Chinese backgrounds. The collection came from a British officer called Sir Edmund Vivian Gabriel. He was a descendant of the Gabrielli’s who were lords of Gubio during the Middle Ages.
