Latina is capital of the province with the same name, which is located in the Lazio region in central Italy. The province as a whole, although relatively small, is made up of some interesting landscape features and historical sites.
In both the south and north-eastern regions there are limestone hills and mountains, which include the Lepini, Aurunci and Ausoni ranges. Here the climate is semi-continental, which gives its hot summers tapered by cold winters. In the mountainous areas there are many medieval settlements, which once used to thrive off of cattle and agriculture, but this has decreased in recent years.
Tourism to this section is good, thanks to the un-commercial backdrop and stunning natural beauty, coupled with the traces of the Middle Ages. Sights such as the Abbeys of Valvisciolo and Fossanova, St. Thomas Aquinas are some of the hotspots and the main areas of this part of the region are Cori, Sezze and Priverno.
Argo Pontino is the plane land that until the 1930’s was a marshland and is where the capital, Sabaudia and Cisterna di Latina are now located. The climate here is mild with warm to hot summers and cool winters. Sabaudia is an important tourist resort of the region. Other areas of interest are the cities of Gaeta and Formia, as well as the Pontine Islands, which has become a tourist hotspot and the inhabited islands are Ponza and Ventotene.
Ponza has a number of interesting sights to visit, such as Capo Bianco, which is a National Natural Monument; Spiaggia Di Chaia di Luna or half moon beach is a popular tourist beach. There is also the Grotta della Maga Circe or the Cave of the Sorceress Circle, which is the official cave from Homer's The Odyssey. The Grotta di Ulisse O Del Sangue is the cave of Ulysses, again the official cave from Homer’s The Odyssey.
West of Ponza there is Palmarola, which is an island that is part of the Pontine Islands; it is a very rocky island and mostly uninhabited. However, due to its landscape there are many natural bays and grottos, or caves that can be explored and enjoyed. The island is a nature reserve and the most spectacular cave on the island is Cava Mazzella. Although the island is more of a nature reserve than a tourist hotspot, it does have a few restaurants that cater for those that venture to the island during the summer months.
