If the crowds and heat start to get too much for you, head to the Roman forum. Not only will you see some of Rome's best genuine Roman ruins, but it is often quieter and the open spaces allow you to cool off a little.

Outside the city

The area surrounding Rome is also full of historic cities and ancient sites, such as the painted tombs at Tarquinia and the emperor's palace and temple at Terracina overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. There are also several tourist resorts along this Mediterranean coast; the ideal place to relax and recharge your batteries after a hectic few days of sightseeing in Rome! Sperlonga is home to a picturesque whitewashed old town and plenty of family-friendly beaches, while the Pontine Islands, reached by a ferry from Rome, are popular with diving enthusiasts.
