Lecco is the capital city of the province of Lecco, which is situated in the region of Lombardy in northern Italy. It is approximately 50 km north of Milan and lies at the south-eastern branch of Lake Como. To the north and east there is the Bergamo Alps and the city lies at the south end of the Valsassina Valley. Lake Como narrows to form the river Adda; there are four bridges over the river which helps to improve road connections in the area. The oldest bridge dates back to around the late 1330’s and is called Azzone Visconti Bridge.
Some of the points of here include the monument in the main square of the famous Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni, while many of the narrow streets and alleyways around the Piazza Roma give visitors a good feel for what the city would have been like during medieval times. There are ruins of the old castle and its walls; to find them turn right at the railway station and walk up Via Montello and keep your eyes open.
If you prefer to be more active there are plenty of places to explore, as well as mountains for those who like to engage in a little climbing. If however you prefer to take it easy while on holiday you can do just that by relaxing at the central beach, but keep an eye on the Swans as they may want a piece of your lunch.
The two most important piazzas are the Piazza Cermenati and the Piazza XX Novembre; this is where you will find most of the interesting buildings, such as impressive Basilica San Nicola cathedral, the tower next to the cathedral La Torre di Viscontea, which is tall and thin and very elegant. Just below the tower is where you will find the palazzo known as The Viscontea, nearby is the Palazzotto di Don Rodrigo, Villa and Museum of the famous writer Manzoni. Like all Italian towns and cities it has a number of religious sites; the ones worth looking up include the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Vittoria, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Gloriosa and the Convent of San Cristofero.
Of course no Italian town or city would be complete without a healthy dose of cafes and restaurants; due to the lake, fish is popular here in many of the local dishes. Some are in the squares, while some have stunning views over the lake; which one you choose is really down to you.
