Liguria is a coastal region located in the north-west of Italy, it is the third smallest of Italy’s regions and its capital is Genoa. It has become a popular destination among tourists thanks to its great food, picture postcard perfect towns and wonderful beaches. The region has France at its western border, Piedmont to its north and Tuscany to its east, its coast is along the Ligurian Sea. The Alps and Apennines mountains make up its land borders, with some of the mountains here rising to over 2000 meters.
There are four provinces within the region: Genoa, where the regional capital is located, Imperia whose capital is Imperia, La Spezia and Savona whose capital cities are also named as per their provinces.
Genoa is not only the regional capital, but is also home to the seaport in northern Italy. Part of the old city of Genoa was marked as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites back in 2006. The climate in this region is Mediterranean with an average yearly temperature of 19 degrees. The regions gets around 2,200 hours of sunshine every year, summer temperatures start at around 20 degrees in May rising to around 27 in July and August, in September only dropping to 24. However, the months of October and November are the wettest and January is the coldest with lows of around 11 degrees during the day and 5 at night.
The city of Imperia has plenty to offer, as well such as its own Old Town known as Parasio; there is a naval museum, a number of beautiful churches and of course its own cathedral. In the La Spezia province there is the Cinque Terre National Park, which is a World Heritage Site; it is a popular destination of holidaymakers who want to have a less commercial getaway. There is also a wonderful path along the coast that connects each of the five villages; bear in mind that it is very high and those with a fear of heights should probably not walk it.
Some of the other places to visit and things to do or try include La Riviera di Ponente, which is the coastline that runs from France to Genoa and the La Riviera di Levante, which is the Italian peninsula itself. Of course when in Italy you must try some of the local cuisine and in Liguria you will find some of the best food in all of Italy. Some of the typical traditional dishes here include mushroom pie, mussels stuffed with herbs and cheese, orate, which is a local fish that is cooked with potatoes and olives and gattafin, which is pasta that has been stuffed with beetroot, onion and parmesan.
