The province of Massa-Carrara, situated on the eastern coast of Italy between Liguria and Emilia Romagna, takes its name from the region's two main towns of Massa and Carrara. Carrara is famous as the source of much of the marble used in constructing historic buildings all over Europe, while Massa is home to the impressive Malaspina fortress. Most visitors to Massa-Carrara come to the area for the stunning coastal scenery and excellent beaches, which have led to many of the small towns and villages by the sea expanding to become larger tourist resorts.
The historic town of Massa is located a few kilometres inland from the village of Marina de Massa. The coastal town is one of the most popular resorts on this stretch of coastline with several beaches and plenty of tourist amenities. Massa itself is a medieval town, with narrow streets winding their way up to the 16th century Malaspina fortress. Carrara marble is famous all over Europe with many churches, palaces and sculptures using the stunning white stone. Start off at the Museo Civico del Marmo or marble museum to learn about the industry before visiting one of the still-in-use quarries on the outskirts of the town to see the stone in its natural state. Every August, as part of the festival of “Mare-Monti-Marmo”, locals take part in the “lizzatura” recreating the ancient method used by miners to take the heavy blocks of marble from the quarries in the mountains down to the sea.
Aside from Massa and Carrara there are few other large towns or cities in the province, with most of the other interesting historical villages tucked away in the Tuscan hills. Not only can you enjoy exploring these picturesque settlements, but many boast spectacular views over the surrounding hills from their main squares or churches. The Tuscan hills have long been popular with walkers and cyclists, as the slopes are gentle, giving you ample opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The highest peaks are near the village of Lunigiana, where you can enjoy skiing in the winter months. Off-road trails for mountain bikes and horses, especially alongside the Magra River, offer a different way of seeing the scenery. Meanwhile, either side of Marina de Massa are a string of coastal villages that are now tourist resorts with plenty to see and do, excellent seafood restaurants and beaches that offer a selection of water sports.
