Campidano, or Medio Campidano, is a province on the island of Sardinia, which is off the western coast of mainland Italy. The province lies in the western region of the island and has a total of 28 communities within its borders.
The Campidano plain is located here and covers around 100 km of land between Cagliari and Oristano. It is a graben, which means it is formed of a section of depressed land that is bordered by parallel faults. It is estimated that the plain was created some four to two million years ago when tectonic activity thrust a section of land downwards. The Tirso River runs across this plain and is the longest river on the island of Sardinia.
Arbus has been a settlement and town since the age of the Neolithic man. Here there is an example of the giant’s grave, which can be found all over the island. They were built in the Bronze Age by the Nuragic civilization; there are 14 major tombs of this type throughout the island, a further two can be found in Gonnosfanadiga. Arbus is known for its coastline and the area of Costa Verde and has a number of lovely beaches to choose from, such as Capo Frasca, Porto Palma and Piscinas. Piscinas' Desert is also located here and spans around 5km, which is considered to be one of the biggest desert systems in Europe. Some of the other sights here include the museum of Sardinian Knife, Monte Granatico, and Church of the Beata Vergine d'Itria and Monte Arcuentu.
Guspini is a popular tourist destination. The mine at Montevecchio is an ancient site, which dates back to Phoenician and Roman times. Here they used to extract galena, which is a natural mineral form of lead and sphalerite, which is a mineral that is the main ore of zinc. Near the town there are some well built and preserved nuraghe’s, which are megalithic buildings. There is also the Phoenician-Punic archaeological site of Neapolis, which was one of the most important towns on Sardinia at the time.
