The region of Molise lies between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea in the south of Italy and is well known for its stunning natural landscapes, fine local cuisine and many archaeological sites. Unlike some of the areas in the far south of Italy, Molise has retained much of its lush greenery and is home to dozens of pleasant beaches, if you prefer to lie back and relax while on holiday rather than explore the sites.
The historic town of Campobasso is the regional capital and is dominated by the impressive Monforte Castle, which is also an archaeological museum dedicated to the various civilisations that have lived in this region from prehistoric times onwards. The area around Campobasso is rich in historical sites and ruins, such as the theatre at Pietrabbondante, the Roman and Gothic-style cathedral in Larino and the spectacular ruins in Sepino.
If you are interested in more modern cultural attractions, Molise is famous for the production of two unusual musical items; church bells in Agnone and bagpipes in the tiny village of Scapoli. Scapoli even hosts an International Bagpipe Festival, attended by musicians from all over the world – an event you probably didn't expect to find outside of Scotland.
Termoli is the main tourist resort, but the area is quiet enough that you should be able to find a beach almost to yourself even in the height of summer. The coastline here is more rocky coves than wide sandy beaches, but there are plenty that are easy to access and that have safe swimming for families. Termoli itself isn't just about beaches and holidaymakers, however, as it is also home to a beautiful Romanesque cathedral and the Svevo Castle.
In the summer, hiking in the Apennine hills or along the Adriatic coast are popular ways to explore this beautiful region, while the more adventurous might like to try mountain biking or horse riding. There are dozens of trails through wooded areas, gorges and even the lower slopes of mountains, depending on your ability and fitness level.
The mountains are the venue for a very different pursuit in the winter months when the region's heavy snowfall makes it an ideal skiing destination. Campitello Matese is the largest ski resort in Molise, best known for its downhill runs, while nearby Capracotta, in the foothills of the Apennines, offers cross-country skiing on trails that are used for hikers and cyclists in the summer.
