The Sardinian province of Ogliastra is situated on the eastern coast of the island. Not only is Ogliastra the most mountainous of Sardinia's provinces, it is also the least populated and the main town, Tortoli, has only around 10,000 inhabitants. This is an area that is popular with visitors who enjoy natural beauty and outdoor activities, rather than lively cities and cultural attractions. Although not well known for its seaside resorts, there are several beaches in Ogliastra, mainly rocky coves and sheltered bays and footpaths along the coastline allow visitors to enjoy the stunning scenery in this part of Sardinia.
The co-capitals of the province of Ogliastra are the towns of Tortoli and Lanusei, both little more than small towns. Tortoli has expanded in recent years as one of the main airports on Sardinia is located nearby, outside the village of Arbatax. Arbatax is also where the cruise ships visiting the island call and is a picturesque Sardinian village with spectacular rocky cliffs. In fact, one of the region's best-known attractions is the red rocks that can be seen along the coastline. Tortoli is also home to a large 18th century church and 16th century fortifications, including the Spanish Tower. Tortoli's town park is one of the more unusual on the island and perhaps in the whole of Italy, as you can explore caves and visit prehistoric standing stones.
The other capital of Ogliastra is the smaller town of Lanusei. Situated slightly away from the coast, Lanusei is more noted for its environmental attractions, including a natural forested amphitheatre and dozens of walking and cycling trails through the countryside. Dotted throughout the area around Lausei are several prehistoric and ancient sites, along with the picturesque Alto Flumendosa Lake, which is a popular place to relax in the sun during the summer months.
The Trenino Verde or Little Green Train is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the whole of Sardinia. Run only for tourists, the historic steam train travels along various routes taking you through some of the best scenery on the island and departs daily in the summer months from Arbatax. Check the schedule for the trip that suits you best or you can even splash out and hire your own steam locomotive for your group and choose your destination. Most day trips include some time to explore the final destination before the return trip departs back to the coast.
