The Sardinian province of Sassari is located in the north-west corner of the island, an area dominated by its proximity to the sea, home to the best of Sardinia's resorts, picturesque coastal towns and even the island's only natural lake. Inland, Sassari is a hilly province, home to traditional Sardinian villages with spectacular views over the sea and some fine examples of prehistoric and ancient ruins.
The popular tourist resorts of Castelsardo, Alghero and Stintino are all located in Sassari. Although they each have plenty of bars, restaurants and sights to see, all three still retain a charm that larger mainland resorts have often lost. While they are all home to excellent family beaches and beautiful stretches of coastline, they are also still traditional Sardinian villages. Castelsardo, Alghero and Stintino are all very popular with tourists and locals alike and can get very busy at weekends – if you prefer some peace and quiet you might prefer to take a boat trip to the island of Asinara, where the beaches can often be a little quieter. Or you could enjoy a day in the sun relaxing by the inland lake of Baratz with its man-made beaches and walking trails.
The Capo Caccia is a headland stretching into the Sardinian Sea, which is home to several unusual and fascinating caves, such as the Green Cave or Grotta Verde, where evidence of ancient settlements have been found, and the Grotta dei Ricami, which can only be reached by boat. The most impressive of Sassari's coastal caves is undoubtedly the Grotta di Nettuno; the entrance to the cave is reached by climbing the 600 steep steps carved into the cliffs.
The main town in the province is also called Sassari and is a pleasant place to visit on a day trip from one of the Sardinian resorts. Home to impressive religious buildings, such as the 13th century cathedral of St Nicholas and the church of San Pietro, as well as the remains of the medieval ramparts, one of the main highlights of Sassari is the local museum, which features many of the artefacts found at prehistoric and ancient sites in the area. Some of these sites can be seen in the area around nearby Porto Torres, where there are churches with mosaic floors dating from Roman times, an ancient temple and even a Roman bridge that is still in use today.
