Lake Trasimeno is the largest lake on the Italian peninsula, which doesn't include the Alpine lakes, like Maggiore and Garda. Surrounded by the pretty Umbrian countryside, with several picturesque villages and castles on its shores, the area around Lake Trasimeno is popular both with those who enjoy outdoor activities, like hiking and cycling, as well as tourists looking for somewhere in this almost land-locked region to enjoy the warm climate with a day on the beach. Although the lake is better known for its fishing than its water sports, there are several places where you can easily access the water or even hire rowing boats to take you to one of Trasimeno's three islands.
Aside from the natural scenery, the most interesting attractions are the villages and castles dotted around the edges of Lake Trasimeno. The largest town and the nearest railway station is Passignano sul Trasimeno, home to a pleasant old town and in the past an important industrial centre. Castiglione del Lago is more popular with tourists, as many of the beaches and other amenities are located on the peninsula where the town is situated.
The Palazzo del Commune or town hall is now a museum dedicated to the history and art of the region, while the town's small church dates from the 16th century. Castiglione del Lago is also home to one of the many castles found around Lake Trasimeno, the Castello del Leone or Fortress of the Lion. Completed in the 13th century, many of the defensive features are still standing today.
Other castles and fortresses include the ruined Zucco Castle, which would be one of the largest in the region if it was complete, and the 20-metre tall Vernazzano leaning tower. Although not as famous or as tall as its famous namesake in Pisa, the tower is an impressive structure and the only remnant of the 11th century castle which once stood on this spot.
One of the islands in Lake Trasimeno is also home to its own castle. The Guglielmi Castle is situated on the Isola Maggiore and, although it is only a couple of hundred years old, is still a popular tourist attraction with those who make their way out to the islands. Isola Maggiore is the only one of the islands to be inhabited, with all 30 residents living in the traditional fishing village. The smallest island, Isola Minore, is worth visiting to see the ruined castle and the perfectly maintained church and monastery.
