The town of Verbania is the capital of the province of Verbana-Cusio-Ossola, which sits at the northernmost point of Piedmont on the Swiss border. Verbania itself is located on the shores of the world-famous Lake Maggiore, one of the many Alpine lakes to be found in this mountainous region.
Although only a small town, there are enough tourist amenities in Verbania to keep you well-fed and entertained while visiting, and there is a reasonable selection of different accommodation options to suit all budgets, Verbania can get busy in the summer months, thanks to the locals and day trippers from cities like Turin and Milan who come out to holiday homes in the town or to spend the day on one of Lake Maggiore's many beaches.
Verbania's biggest attraction is always going to be its proximity to Lake Maggiore, but the town itself has plenty to offer tourists, including several stunning locations with great views over the water. You can spend time wandering the streets of the old town, which are now home to craft and tourist shops, as well as bars and cafes, or visit one of the opulent private houses that are open to the public.
The Villa Taranto has an extensive botanical garden, while the impressively grand Villa Ducale is surrounded by typical Italianate grounds. The oldest of the three, Villa Stresa, is an excellent example of the local style of architecture and boasts one of the better views of Lake Maggiore.
The lake itself is, of course, worth spending a lot of time exploring, whether you choose to do this on foot, on one of the many walking trails the line the shore, or by taking a day trip on a boat, the stunning Alpine scenery that surrounds you at every turn will make this an unforgettable location.
There are different options when it comes to the boat trips on offer, as it is possible to disembark on some of the Isole Borromea, islands in the middle of the lake named after the family that once owned much of the land in these parts. Some are home to luxury country homes, others to chapels and religious sanctuaries.
To enjoy a unique view of Verbania and Lake Maggiore, you should climb the Sacro Monte de Ghiffa, which dominates the area. One of the sacred mountains of Piedmont, there are pilgrimage points throughout the climb and a 17th century chapel at the peak.
