The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the countries most popular attractions and one of the oldest companies in the world. Salt has been excavated from the mine since the 13th century, but the reason people flock to see the mine is the amazing artworks inside. A city has been carved into the rock salt here, with artworks and sculptures including an impressive cathedral with artworks such as The Last Supper and a statue of Pope John Paul II.
Malbork Castle is the largest castle in the world by surface area. It is a brick building and at the time of its construction, in the 14th century, it was the largest brick castle in the world and today is still the largest brick building in Europe. During World War 2, much of the castle was destroyed and has since been rebuilt; only the cathedral is still in ruins. Today the castle is a World Heritage Site and museum filled with exhibits offering a glimpse into life in the castle during the days of the Teutonic Knights. The Castle is also host to several festivals and events throughout the year.
The Bialowieza Forest is one of the few remaining ancient forests in Europe. The forest is full of wildlife including the rare European Bison. The forest crosses into the neighbouring country of Belarus, and there are security fences running through the forest with crossings for hikers and cyclists.
