Portugal has great variety in it's geography from the lush valleys of the Douro wine making region to the open plains of the Alentejo region down to the golden sand beaches of the Algarve.
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and has been built on hills overlooking the Tagus river and the Atlantic. There are a large variety of museums and monuments to visit with the Jerónimos monastery and the Moorish Castelo de São Jorge being some of the more famous.
Madeira is in the Altantic off the coast of Portugal lapped by the waters of the Gulf Stream with warm comfortable summers and mild winters and is known as the Pearl of the Atlantic.
The Algarve is the Southernmost region of Portugal and with it's fine weather and excellent sandy beaches it has become one of the favourite destinations for tourists throughout the year.
To the east of the Algarve the beaches tend to be wide and flat whilst in the west they are in smaller bays and coves backed by the cliffs providing spectacular scenery.
The Algarve is ideal for the sports enthusiast having many famous golf courses and a wide variety of water sports.
