Altura is a traditional fishing village and holiday resort in the southeastern region of Algarve close to the Spanish border. It is a pleasant destination with attractive beaches that are close by which can get quite popular, especially in the height of summer. The village is usually quiet with an almost non-existant nightlife. This means that if you are in the village after dark, you can continue to enjoy the peace and relaxation that you have been enjoying all day without being disturbed by the noise from nearby nightclubs and young drinkers like you would be in some other places. Whatever time of the day, any day of the week, Altura is quite a laid-back place making it most suitable for families with children. If you are interested in a vibrant nightlife though, Monte Gordo is only ten minutes away, which also features a casino.
There are several restaurants in Altura, usually fish and seafood because of the nature of the village but many tastes are catered for. There are also the usual small shops you would expect from a village in Algarve and a few on the holiday resort itself. With eastern Algarve being mainly undeveloped, it offers a wide variety of enjoyable walks. Its proximity to Spain means that you can visit the Andalucía region and towns such as Ayamonte or Huelva without travelling too far but if you're willing to travel far from Altura, Sevilla is recommended.
