Ericeira is a town along the west coast of Portugal and is popular with tourists and fishermen for its beach - many places in town cater towards one or the other. The name is derived from the Portuguese word for sea urchin and is featured on its coat of arms. Its history dating back to the 12th century is made up of many generations of fishermen and their families working in all conditions to make a living. Today, lovers of fish and seafood can taste some of the best freshest catches that the region has to offer. Although the town does also feature various other cuisines as well if you're not interested in fish. It is a charming typical seaside town - everyone is friendly and willing to help visitors so feel free to start a conversation if you want to. There are its quiet peaceful areas and there are its busier areas, however you never get the feeling of isolation or over-crowdedness wherever you are in town.
The Atlantic Ocean is quite stunning, both visually and if you are a surfer whether you are professional or an amateur, however there are some beaches in the area that are not suited towards beginners but if you are a beginner and do want to try surfing here those that are suitable are well marked; just make sure that you are on the right beach for your skill level. If you're not into surfing, get the most out of the sea by finding a nice cafe or restaurant to watch the surfers riding the excitable waves. But being on the beach itself is quite pleasant too and has the usual services and facilities close by. Ericeira also has a decent nightlife with its main nightclub recently celebrating its 50th year in operation. The town is known for its interest in the music culture and has a long and rich musical heritage, symbolised by the Filarmónica Cultural Ericeira music school that is free to anyone who wishes to attend.
