Guarda has a long history of civilisation dating back to the pre-Roman era but the actual town itself was founded in 1197 because its location on a plateau approximately half way up the slopes of Serra da Estrela made it an important role of defence during battles against the Moors and the Spaniards. Indeed, this is how the town was given its name. It can be quite cold in the town given its proximity to the peaks of the mountain range so bear this in mind if you're staying or visiting.
Modern day Guarda is still pretty much an old town with many impressive cathedrals, churches and buildings of a variety of different architecture dating back to various periods throughout history. The ruins of the town's 13th century castle can also be seen but very little of it remains today. Guarda is an interesting place to visit if you are interested in sight seeing and historical buildings. The town centre has a variety of different restaurants that offer a variety of good food and shops that you can go to. Between March and May, the town holds a jazz festival and several performances take place every week attracting people from nearby other towns and villages as well.
Guarda is located close by a beautiful national park which is ideal to visit for a lovely walk amidst the gorgeous countryside and along the Mondego River. It is usually quite warm and is worlds apart from the cold town of Guarda making it an ideal place to visit if you want a change of temperature and pace of life. Or if you desire a change of temperature and pace of life in the other direction, there is a ski resort upon the snowy peaks of the mountain range where you can also participate in other snow related sporting activities.
