Because of the increase in tourism over recent years, Praia da Luz is almost completely a holiday resort with little of its fishing and roman heritage remaining. Like other nearby villages and towns, the original Praia da Luz was also destroyed during the earthquake of 1755 but has since been redeveloped into the modern resort it is today with typical services, facilities, shops, restaurants and entertainment. If you look around, some of the roman remains can still be seen such as a stone arch aqueduct and baths. The beach is the sole reason why many tourists flock to Praia da Luz year after year.
