Sagres is a small town in the Vila do Bispo municipality in the very southwestern most corner of Portugal. One of the first things you'll notice about the town is that it is lacking in historical buildings. This is because the original town was destroyed in an earthquake during 1755. Since then, the town has been rebuilt into a very pleasant location with an attractive town square, some fish and seafood restaurants and a few small shops. Despite the earthquake, Sagres has a rich history with its most significant claim being that Prince Henry the Navigator had lived here during the 15th century and had a school of navigation. These days however, Sagres is well known for its beautiful sheltered beaches popular with sunbathers and surfers alike.
