São Brás is a charming town in eastern Algarve that incorporates the old with the new. It was once a settlement in Roman times and later came to be occupied by the Moors. The old part of town, where the church is, has narrow cobbled streets with typically white houses with some small shops and cafes. São Brás' main industry used to be cork production but this moved to central Portugal. Since then, São Brás has taken on tourism and crafts. This is clear to see in the modern areas of town, which has wider streets and modern buildings with many restaurants, cafes and larger shops along with typical services and facilities. Because of the criss-cross layout of the streets, it can be difficult for some to find their way around town but the town is quite pleasant to walk around whether you're in the old part or the new part. Just beyond São Brás is the captivating, tranquil village of Alportel, which is worth visiting when in São Brás.
