Silves is a town located in central Algarve just a few kilometers away from Lagoa. It lies beside the banks of the Arade River, which runs prominently through the town and is lined by orange and lemon trees, which enhances the rivers appearance. The river was once in used by large vessels however this is not the case now because it is too silted up. Instead there are several small boats using the river either by private owners or to take visitors up and down the river.
The town is historical in nature with many monuments of importance. The most significant of which is of course the Castelo de Silves on the hilltop above Silves which can be seen from almost anywhere in town. It is a well-preserved castle and is notable for being the best in Algarve. Only the defensive walls and towers lie in ruins. Visitors can walk around the castle and take in the amazing views of Silves below and its surrounding areas. Visiting the castle is a must for anybody staying in the area. Alongside the castle is the Cathedral of gothic design and has several ancient tombs within.
The town itself is quite pleasant and traditionally Algarve with friendly people and a pleasant atmosphere. There are several restaurants and cafes around and also various shops. Silves has two annual festivals - one celebrates beer and lasts ten days of straight drinking. The other celebrates oranges and is a much more wholesome affair for the children where the funfair comes to town with fairground rides and stalls. Unless you're staying when a festival is taking place, you will enjoy a relaxing peaceful holiday in tranquil surroundings.
