Vale do Mondego is an agricultural area of six farms together in 33.3 acres in the vast countryside of central Portugal. Visitors can stay in one of the traditional houses in the area. The farms consist of many pastures, trees, groves and gardens, growing a wide variety of different vegetables, fruits and herbs. The farms also have a large amount of animals such as sheep grazing throughout the area and cheeses are produced here, including the famous Queijo da Estrela. The river running through Vale do Mondego is an important water source and is also a pleasant relaxing place during the summer where guests are welcome to cool themselves down in the river and the nearby trees offer a perfect place to get out of the hot sun into the shade. There are plenty of opportunities to go walking and just soak in the atmosphere of a traditional Portuguese farm. Visitors can dine at The Lagar Lounge, which offers a quality freshly prepared three-course meal with a three-course meal costing 15 Euros per person and enjoy being able to talk with other guests or be able to watch TV. The lounge also has WiFi Internet connection if you need to use it.
Vale do Mondego is recommended if you're agriculturally minded or you wish to completely get away from most of your modern comforts (thankfully, you'll still be able to have a regular beer and good meal plus the cottages and country houses are furnished if you're staying in one). Vale do Mondego is all about getting back to nature and living off the land however the town of Guarda half-way up the slopes of the Serra da Estrela is only 12km away for when you need to stock up on supplies or you want to return to civilisation for the day. You can take in the sights of the impressive old cathedrals, churches and other buildings or visit one of the varied restaurants around the town that serve good food; although the farm's food is good too, you may welcome being able to experience a different kind of meal. Guarda is a distinct contrast to Vale do Mondego and because it’s not far away, you can enjoy the best of both worlds if you wish. You may sometimes feel like the rest of the world is far away when you're staying in Vale do Mondego because of how quiet it can feel but a change of scenery is only a short drive away if you need it.
