Romania has come a long way since the leadership of Nicolae Ceausescu and the Bloody Revolution. Its then damaged economy has recovered significantly and the capital of Bucharest is now one of the largest financial and industrial centres in Eastern Europe. Adorning its capital’s centre stands The Romanian Athenaeum, a huge hall built by the co-operation of a French and a home grown architect. Its acoustics honour the musicians that play there and it is certainly a visit that will stir an evening’s entertainment.
The country predates to prehistoric times where some of the oldest remains of Homo sapiens were found in the Cave with Bones. This cave is only one of many found throughout the lands of Romania. Its landscape is blessed with many national parks and natural parks and other subterranean wonders such as the 3500-year old Scarisoara glacier, this phenomenon is one of the largest underground glaciers in Europe. Above the ground, the parks are blessed with many varieties of flora that intersperse with the differing landscapes, mountains and volcanic lakes with virgin forests descending to the grasslands. Many rivers meander throughout including the romantic Danube. The Danube Delta in Romania is an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the largest wetland in Europe.
The parks give excellent opportunity for walking trails, horse riding, climbing through the mountainous regions, birdwatching for predators and rare species. The natural parks are full of wild animals with bears, wolves and many others that can be spotted in organised outdoor activities. There are also many picnic areas where you can rest and take in the sheer beauty of Romania. Or sample the local produce with their wholesome soups, cheese, bread and their national alcoholic drink of Tuica which is made of fermented plums, apples or peaches. Traditional crafts are still practised and these make wonderful souvenirs.
