Asturius is one of the northernmost regions of Spain, with three main cities; Oviedo, Aviles and Gijion with most of the region being made up of meadows and mountains with nine remote beaches along its coast such as Cuevas de Mar which, while lesser known and much less popular than many of Spain's other beaches, are just as good - well worth a visit if you are wanting a quality beach but are put off by crowds.
The mountain ranges Monte Naranco and the Picos de Europa are relatively close to the historic bustling capital Oviedo, notable for being quite clean and friendly, which offers a market, several cafes, a large park, a museum and plenty of places to go shopping. The colourful Aviles is also a large busy old town whereas the quieter Gijion is a port town with some various museums to visit.
