The small town of Alforja is located within the foothills of the Prades Mountains in Catalonia, within a province that also shares its name. Most popular with those who have come to explore the Catalan scenery rather than enjoy the region's good weather and excellent beaches, the town is only a short drive from some of most impressive peaks in the area. If you are a sun worshipper, however, the Mediterranean coast is only a short drive away if you have hired a car, which is a good idea as public transport is not very frequent, even in the busy summer months.
The town of Alforja itself has a pleasant old town, with a charming historic church and some fine examples of Moorish architecture. Alforja commands breathtaking views over the neighbouring Prades Mountains and the Parque Natural Montsant, but to enjoy the really spectacular vistas, you need to hike or climb even higher. Many of the peaks within the Prades range are quite simple to climb, as most are forested to a decent height with rounded tops, rather than jagged rocks on the final climbs.
The highest peak is the Tossana de la Baltasana at 1,200 metres in height, and you can often find local guides through tourist information centres who will be willing to take you to the top and add some local colour en route. The path is clearly marked if you want to follow the route yourself. The Parque Natural de Montsant, though lower than the Prades peaks, is still popular with walkers and mountain bikers. There are several routes, of varying difficulties and lengths, throughout the park, with highlights including the stunning Fragereau gorge and the beautiful water features at the Cadolla Falls.
If you are staying in Alforja and have hired a car, then you have plenty of options for day trips further afield in the fascinating region of Catalonia. The nearest large city is Reus, which is famous as the birthplace of the architect Antoni Gaudi, even though he didn't design any of the modern buildings here!
The Gaudi Centre in the town gives visitors an insight into his life and work and features models of some of his most famous creations. The busy resort of Salou is the nearest seaside town to Alforja, featuring a selection of sandy beaches and all the usual tourist amenities, including the PortAventura water and theme park
