The small village of Algorfa is located on the banks of the River Segura, about twenty minutes drive inland from Alicante. The river has always been an important part of Algorfa's history as the villagers made their money from citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons, before the tourists arrived; though you can still buy and enjoy locally grown produce. Although Algorfa is a small village with a just a few thousand inhabitants, there are still a number of hotels, including one at the major golf resort La Finca, and a number of restaurants specialising in local cuisine.

The village itself is only small, though the main square hosts a number of cultural events throughout the summer months for visitors and locals to enjoy. Many are based around the citrus fruit industry that provided most of the employment in the region until the area around Alicante became popular with tourists. Just outside the town itself, you can visit an intriguing neo-Gothic church, built in the nineteenth century and one of the best examples of this type of architecture in the region. Although Algorfa is inland, the seaside town of Guardamar del Segura, at the mouth of the river, is close by, with a local bus service running regularly in the summer. Local markets are held in the main square on Wednesdays, and in other parts of the village on Fridays and Sunday afternoons. Each has a different speciality, though all three sell local oranges and lemons in abundance.

One of the best features of Algorfa is the surrounding countryside, the walks by the river and the unusual salt lakes which can be found not far outside the settlement. There are a number of walks in the area which combine to show visitors the best of the surrounding area. Above La Finca golf course you can climb to the top of a small hill topped by a monument which gives you a great view of Algorfa and the surrounding area, all the way to Alicante and the sea on a clear day. For a flatter walk, you can follow the River Segura in either direction; heading towards Guardemar nature lovers can appreciate the plants and trees that have been planted on the bank by the local council while in the other direction, towards Orihuela, the landscape becomes a little wilder and is home to various species of water birds. Both routes are also suitable for bicycles.
