Almáchar is a small town in the province of Málaga built on a small hill in the Axarquía region close to the mountains of Malaga. Cereal and olive groves surround Almáchar as does several vineyards. Almáchar has narrow streets because the town is largely unchanged from its original structure so they are unsuitable for cars - parking is recommended at the entrance to the town.
Its main attraction is the Church of San Mateo dating back to the 16th century and is known for its late Gothic and Renaissance style architecture. There is also a museum focusing on the cultivation of raisins, which details how raisins used to be made in the town and also has various equipment, which was used to do so. Various festivals take place in the town throughout the year, which usually consist of processions, musical, dancing and sporting activities. The town's traditional cuisine is the ajoblanco, a cold garlic soup with almond, which the Almachareño people also have a festival named after in recognition of their most well known speciality.

Church of San Mateo - The church of San Mateo was built in the 16th century in the centre of the town. The church was built in the late Gothic and Renaissance style architecture. When it was built, it was built with 3 columned naves, with peaked arches. The structure of the ceilings within the 3 naves differs from one another.
The central nave is hiding structure beneath a panelled archway. The front part of the archway makes a vault in a cross shape. At the end of one of the naves there is a cabin dedicated to the Dolorosa and within the presbytery there is another cabin known as the Baroque cabin with the image of the Cristo de la Misericordia which translates to the Christ of Mercy.
