Almerimar is a purpose-built resort in Almeria, located on the Mediterranean coast about 160 kilometres east of Malaga. Although the location has proven to be ideal for sun worshippers, with little rainfall each year, the resort's proximity to the Sierra Nevada mountains means it is also an ideal destination for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits including, in the winter, skiing. The resort of Almerimar itself consists mainly of private houses, which are often rented out as holiday rentals, though there are also two hotels on the site, plus a number of bars and restaurants if you don't feel like doing the cooking in your self catering accommodation.

As with most purpose-built resorts in Spain, Almerimar is home to an 18-hole golf course, which offers lessons and equipment hire. Located on the beach, the resort is also well known for the range of water sports that it can offer visitors, including sailing and windsurfing. If you prefer something a bit more adventurous, you can have a go at water skiing or take advantage of the clear waters in this part of the Mediterranean to try your hand at scuba diving, under the close supervision of the resort's own experts. Of course, you can always just lie back on the beach and relax instead, watching everyone else work up a sweat. The Marina at Almerimar allows residents to moor their own boats or to rent one for the afternoon. You can also take organised trips out to sea and have a go at deep sea fishing – maybe even catch your own dinner.

Further afield, out into the countryside, you can enjoy the Almeria scenery by following one of the many walking or biking trails in the mountains. If you are visiting the resort in the winter months, the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains even have their own ski slopes, just an hour's drive from the beaches of Almerimar. You could be on the slopes in the morning and sitting at a beach bar enjoying a chilled beer by the afternoon! The mountain range doesn't just offer visitors the chance to ski, however, as there are plenty of other outdoor activities available, all year round. These include rock climbing and canoeing, and trips can be organised from the resort or with their assistance, if there are enough people interested.

The nearest town is El Ejido, inland from Almerimar. While it is home to some interesting modern architecture, it is best known for the mass production of various fruits. It also has all the practical facilities that visitors may need that are not provided on site at the resort.
