Welcome to our selection of holiday homes to rent in Almunecar, Spain.
The historical town of Almunecar has been one of Spain's most popular tourist towns for over forty years. Located 80 kilometres south of the famous city of Granada, the town is on the Costa Tropical, between the Costa de Sol and the Costa Almeria on the southern coast of Spain. Home to a number of popular beaches and tourist attractions, Almunecar is also the setting for the Spanish Civil War novel 'As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning' by Laurie Lee.
Families have been coming to Almunecar for their holidays for many years, and there are now a wide variety of different tourist attractions to keep children and adults of all ages occupied. The 'Loro Sexi' bird park is always popular with younger children and features colourful and noisy birds such as parrots, canaries, cockatoos plus 200 other species. Unlike some parks of this kind, the birds don't perform tricks or shows, instead visitors are encouraged to view the creatures in aviaries that recreate their natural habitats. The Almunecar Aquarium is a fascinating afternoon out for the whole family, with most species on display being native to the Mediterranean, including many that feature in the shark tank with its 17 metre long tunnel! During the summer months, there are often practical activities and fun, yet educational games, for the youngsters. Adults may prefer the Almunecar House of Culture, a museum dedicated to 3,000 years of local history from pre-historical settlements, through Roman times and the Andalucian kingdom to the modern day.
There are several beaches in the Almunecar area, ranging from large and busy stretches of sand like Playa Puerta del Mar and Playa San Cristobal to smaller, sheltered coves such as Playa Calabajio and Playa Cabria. The more popular beaches usually have a lifeguard working in the summer months and also offer facilities such as toilets, showers and even lockers for your valuables. While most of the beaches are open to the public, there are some private stretches where you can rent sunbeds and parasols. These parts usually also have their own bar or café where you can buy drinks and snacks without ever leaving the sand. All of the Almunecar beaches are served by a bus service from the town centre, so it's easy even for those without cars or with families to try out different sunbathing and swimming spots. Visitors can also try out a range of water sports and activities on the different beaches, from hiring a pedalo or windsurfing to more extreme pastimes like water skiing or the always popular para-sailing.
