Welcome to our selection of holiday homes to rent in Antequera, Spain.
Known as “the heart of Andalucia” thanks to its central location between the major towns of Seville, Cordoba, Malaga and Granada, Antequera is a history lover's dream destination. Buildings and structures from the Bronze Age to the 19th century can be visited in and around the town, which is becoming more and more popular as a day trip destination for tourists on the nearby Costa del Sol.
Antequera's most famous attractions are probably the two large burial mounds that can be found on the outskirts of the town. They are the largest structures of their kind in the whole of Europe, with the largest, the Dolmen de Menga, consisting of 32 megaliths or large stones, some weighing up to 180 tonnes. Visitors can still follow the path through the centre of the dolmen, where archaeologists found several hundred skeletons during their excavations.
There are also several Roman ruins in the Antequera region, including a 1st century BC villa and the town's baths. An archway was built in the 16th century in honour of the then King of Spain, Philip II using stones that had been taken from Roman buildings in and around the town. This 'Arco de los Gigantes' is another of the most popular tourist attractions in Antequera.
Of the more modern structures in Antequera, the most popular is undoubtedly the Alcazaba, a palace and fortress dating from Moorish times, in the 14th century. Of all the Moorish castles in Spain, only the Calhaorra in Gibraltar is larger than the Alcazaba, which has many of the traditional features associated with structures of this time, such as the rectangular shape and the style of the walls and towers. The town's 18th century Palace of Najera, once an opulent private home, now houses the local municipal museum, featuring items from nearby excavations as well as information about the long and fascinating history of Antequera. The town is also home to other museums, in which visitors can see most of the precious and historically significant artefacts in the whole Malaga region.
Like many towns in this part of Spain, Antequera's bull ring remains the centre of many of the region's cultural events. Even if you don't want to go and see a bullfight, it is worth visiting the 'Plaza de Toros' which was rebuilt in 1984 in a modern style which still manages to pay homage to the radically different types of architecture found throughout Antequera.
