Situated on the Costa Brava in the Catalonia region of northern Spain, the small resort of Cala Montgo is around an hour's drive north from the airport at Girona and a similar distance south of the French border and the spectacular Pyrenees Mountains.
Cala Montgo is actually part of the larger resort of Escala, which has all the tourist amenities expected of Costa Brava resorts, such as bars, restaurants and family entertainment. This means that those staying in Cala Montgo can enjoy its relative peace and quiet while remaining within walking distance of a bustling and lively resort. The area is particularly popular with those who enjoy outdoor activities, especially water sports like diving and sea kayaking.
The beach in Cala Montgo itself is relatively unspoilt, with only a few beach bars to interrupt the beautiful view of the cliffs and headland. It is often much quieter than the neighbouring beaches in Escala in the summer, and is a great place to head if you want to explore the area on foot as there are several paths along the cliff tops.
Water sports enthusiasts are catered for, with windsurfing, sailing and sea kayaking all departing from Cala Montgo. In fact, sea kayaking is an excellent way to appreciate this spectacular stretch of coastline, with its hidden coves and caves and towering rocky cliffs. Day trips leave from the beach and you are accompanied by an expert guide at all times. If you prefer to take things a little easier, then tourist boat trips from Escala follow a similar route.
The neighbouring resort of Escala, which now actually runs into Cala Montgo, is home to several beaches, most of which have been awarded Blue Flags for water cleanliness. The main beach is backed by a pleasant promenade, which is a great place for lunch or dinner with a sea view, while the old town, with its typical narrow streets and medieval buildings, also has its own small beaches.
History lovers should lake sure they don't miss out on visiting the ancient ruins of Empuries, while the weekly market held on the promenade is an ideal opportunity to pick up some local produce or crafts. If you hire a car, the French border and the impressive scenery of the Pyrenees is within easy reach, while the historic and cultural centre of Girona is only an hour away by car. Public transport also runs regularly between Escala and Girona in the summer months.
