Calella de Palafrugell is located in the province of Girona, which is situated in the northeastern region of Spain that borders France. It is one of the coastal towns that make up the municipality of Palafrugell; the other two towns are Llafranc and Tamariu. Calella de Palafrugell is a fishing village and small holiday resort that is part of the Costa Brava.
The Sant Pere de Calella Church dates back to around 1885, so in relative church terms is it quite young. It was built in the Eclectic style and saw a refurbishment back in 1958. There are mural paintings inside the church; some were done by Raimon Roca and others by Antoni Utrillo.
The Calella Watchtower was the first line of defence back in the 16th century when it was constructed, but today is a hotel, which bears the same name.
Passeig Del Canadell is where you will find the summer home of the Catalonian writer Joseph Pla. The summer houses here were built in the 19th century and were the first to have basements; there is also a promenade here, which dates back to the same time.
Activ Natura Adventure Park is a great day out for all the family; it has many outdoor activities such as a giant swing, a high rope course to complete, various mountain bike trails, touchball field and archery.
There are a number of lovely coves and they can all be reached via the coastal walkway that links Calella de Palafrugell to Llafranc. The first is called Canadell and there is a fabulous restaurant on the beach, which is open all year round. Port Bo is a smaller sandy cove, which is south of Calella de Palafrugell. Les Votles has a small promenade and a few cafes and restaurants, as well as a beach shop. There are another 4 coves along the route that covers about 2 km.
The Havaneres Festival of Calella de Palafrugell is held every June; it is based around the sea Shanties that were brought back from Cuba by sailors. They tell of lost loves and faraway ancestors. These concerts are usually accompanied by guitar, accordions and sometimes bass and the main event is the Cantada d'Havaneres. If however you miss any of these events, then there are a number of cafes that have a very distinctive habanera style, flair and flavour, so you need not miss out entirely.
