With its pleasant beaches, bars and restaurants, Calpe could be like just any other resort on this stretch of the Costa Blanca – if it wasn't for the large rock that dominates the town and the skyline as you approach. If you are fit enough to climb to the top, then you can enjoy fantastic views along the coast in either direction, or you can just appreciate the grandeur of the Penon de Ifach from the bottom. If mountain climbing isn't for you, especially in the warm temperatures that you get all year round in this part of Spain, there is still lots to see and do in Calpe, which is home to buildings and ruins that date as far back as Roman times, while the local museum features an impressive collection of artefacts that have been found in local digs.

The giant rock that dominates Calpe, also known as the Penon de Ifach, definitely makes this small town stand out from its neighbours. You can climb to the summit all year round, though if you want to go up with a guide, who will tell you more about the history and wildlife of the rock as you climb, it is essential that you book in advance to avoid disappointment. The walk takes around two hours, depending on the fitness of your group and the temperature that day! Part of the climb involves going through a tunnel, and the path is quite steep at this point, meaning that it is unsuitable for younger children. The route you take up the Penon de Ifach allows you to enjoy the view in both directions; north towards Javea and the Montgo mountain as well as south towards the high rise buildings of Benidorm.

Throughout the town, and on the Penon de Ifach itself, you will see the remains of many towers, some more complete than others. Once part of a ring of forts and a defensive wall that protected the town, now many of them have become part of churches or private houses. Examples of Moorish architecture can be seen in many of the older structures, particularly the Forat de la Mar, one of the gates in Calpe's walls. There are are several museums in the small town, one featuring archaeological finds from around the region, another telling the history of the town and its people and even a museum dedicated to the ever-popular comics, with an innovative mural painted on the exterior.
