The region of Calvia, west of Mallorca's main town of Palma, is home to many of the island's largest and best known tourist resorts. Destinations like Santa Ponsa, Magaluf and Palma Nova are popular with both families and groups of young people from the UK. Many of the bars and restaurants within these resorts serve British food and drink, though it is possible to find venues serving authentic Spanish cuisine, especially excellent seafood dishes, such as paella. This stretch of coastline is home to several excellent beaches, as well as other tourist attractions like water parks and fun fairs, while many tour operators also organise day trips on the sea or to other parts of the island.
The beaches in the main resorts are all long, wide expanses of sand with loungers and parasols for hire, a wide variety of water sports on offer and a good selection of beach bars for a lunchtime snack. If you have hired a car and want to head off the beaten track, there are other prettier and quieter beaches on this part of Mallorca, such as Caló d´en Monjo, a tiny beach only reached on foot from Cala Fornells and Sa Platgeta de Portals Vells, which is also home to a number of caves for children to explore when they have had enough of the sun. Many of the more remote beaches in this part of the island are also nudist beaches, but they are well signed and you are not required to take your clothes off if you want to bathe there.
Most of the tourist attractions in this part of Mallorca were built and opened recently to cater to the influx of British tourists. There are several water parks, such as Aqualand Magaluf and Western Park – a combination of Wild West rides and water slides. Golf Fantasia is a mini-golf course with a difference as you walk among waterfalls, caves and beautiful tropical gardens, while Marineland is very popular with families who enjoy the daily shows by performing dolphins and seals.
Night-time entertainment includes shows by Cirque du Soleil at the Gran Casino in Sol de Mallorca, as well as a pirate-themed evening for all the family, including dinner and live entertainment. Finally, thrill seekers can round off a day on the beach or a night on the town with a hair-raising ride in the Magaluf Bungee Rocket Human catapult.
