Canillas de Aceituno is in the Axarquia region to the east of Malaga within the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park inland from Torre del Mar. Tis pretty white village is situated on La Maroma, the highest mountain in Axarquia and has spectacular views across the surrounding countryside to Lake Vinuela and to the coast.
Canillas de Aceituno dates from Moorish times and was founded as a fabric production centre of aceituno, a silk based fabric, from which the village takes it's name. There are various achitectural features woth visiting such as the village tower known as the Moorish Queen and the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a gothic style building containing a collection of paintings and sculpures made using precious metals.
The area is popular amongst hiking and cycling enthusiasts being convenient to the well known beauty spots in the National Park. A path from the village to the summit of La Maroma is a popular trail for the more adventurous. A large municipal swimming pool on the edge of the village is very popular in the summer months.
