Cheste is located in the central region of Spain, known as the Valencian Community, in the Hoya de Buñol comarca. Cheste, which in Valencian is Xest, is situated about 31 km to the west of the capital.
The Treasure of Chests can now be seen in the Museum of History in Valencia; it is a set of jewels, gold and silver coins that were found in 1864 around la Safa. One of the coins was a denarius Sgdenham 140, which dates back to 221 BC. A short distance from the town is the Circuit de Valencia, which is a motor sports racetrack and is home to the Valencian Community motorcycle Grand Prix.
The Tomatina is Spain’s world famous Tomato Fight and it is held every year in the nearby town of Buñol. It all started back in 1945 and the fight begins and ends with a single gunshot. Participants hurl tomatoes at each other until the second shot is fired, then the traditional hosing down of the plaza and the contests take place. Although this sounds like a very bizarre event, and it is, it has attracted tourist from all over the world and even media reports who have been known to take part in the event.
If you have small children, then this is a must: head to the capital and spend a night sleeping with the fishes or in this case the sharks. At the Oceanográfico, which is located in the City of Arts and Sciences, you will have the opportunity to spend the evening and night sleeping in the underwater tunnel where you can see bull sharks, grey sharks, sawfish and sunfish. Of course the next day you can spend exploring the rest of the Oceanográfico, as well as the Science Museum and maybe even the Hemisfèric. During March Valencia hosts the Las Fallas Festival, which is said to be the best fiesta in the world.
Although Cheste itself is not your typical tourist destination, it does have the benefit of being unspoilt by commercialisation, therefore if you want to experience a more relaxed and traditional side of Spain that is still within easy driving distance of some of the more popular destination, then Cheste is the place to be. It is a great base point for exploring the surrounding area and the Valencian Community, as there are many interesting buildings and archaeological sites dotted around this region of Spain.
