Located 30 kilometres west of Malaga and the same distance north of Marbella, the small town of Coin has become very popular as somewhere for ex-pat British people to settle down in Spain. There are a few hotels and guest houses, but the majority of the tourist accommodation is in rented properties, allowing you to save some money and try cooking your own meals. Not that there is any shortage of bars and restaurants if you do want to go out to eat, with many providing a good mix of British and Spanish food.

The town of Coin has a long and interesting history, dating from Roman times through to its minor moment of fame as the setting for the unsuccessful BBC soap “Eldorado”. At the site known as Llano de la Virgen, archaeologists have even found evidence of prehistoric settlements and relics discovered in this spot are to be found in many of the region's museums. There are many churches in the town of Coin, including a chapel called Nuestra Señora de Fuensanta, which inspired a well-known Spanish novel after the local priest was murdered there in the late 1900s.

Although you are a fair distance away from the beach in Coin, there are other areas of natural beauty that can be reached either by foot or a shorter drive. In fact, the town is surrounded by several areas of forestry, such as Alpujata, El Charco del Infierno and La Albuquera. These are all great spots to explore on foot, although you should take a picnic as most are quite remote and don't have tourist centres or other amenities. If you are staying on the coast and looking for some peace and quiet in the summer months, the woods around Coin are the perfect place to find it.

Although the town of Coin is not a typical tourist resort, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you entertained on an evening; many targeting the ex-pat community with British beer and entertainment such as quizzes and live music. You can still enjoy some typically Spanish entertainment if you are in Coin as they hold two ferias or fairs each year, one in May and the other in August, to appeal to the tourist crowd. On these occasions there are events and performances all day, concluding with a long fireworks display and the party will continue long into the night.
