The small town of Colmenar is located in the mountains, 30 kilometres north of the town of Malaga; and is even known as the “Capital of the Montes de Malaga”. The mountains themselves provide spectacular scenery for the visitor staying in or visiting the Colmenar region, while the town itself is home to a 17th century hermitage which has now been named a local monument of historical importance.

The hermitage of La Santísima Virgen de la Candelaria, built in the 17th century, is located on the hill overlooking the town. The building itself is relatively simple, with few of the usual religious works of art you see in Spanish churches. There are details about the history of the building, and the patron saint it is dedicated to, in a small side chapel. Those who decide to make the climb up to the hermitage are not only rewarded with an interesting building to look around, but also a spectacular view over the town of Colmenar, the surrounding mountains and even as far as the sea, on a clear day.

The Montes de Malaga is not only the name of the range of mountains, but also the natural park that surrounds them. The region is well known for its wide variety of plant and animal life, that you may be lucky enough to spot if you are exploring the area on foot. There are a network of paths through the lower reaches of the mountains which are easy for even young children to follow, while trails that go higher should probably only be tackled by those who are more experienced at hill walking, especially in uncertain weather conditions. If you don't want to tackle any of the higher peaks, there is a museum in the town of Torrijos dedicated to the history of the region and its people, particularly the different farming and wine production methods that have been used over the centuries.

Should you be staying in Colmenar or the surrounding region, there are a number of small towns and villages that could prove to be an interesting and diverting day out. Antequera is home to a range of historic monuments and buildings, dating from the Bronze Age to the 19th century, including some of the largest burial mounds in Europe. The Axarquia region is full of tiny village,s perched on the mountaintops, reached by twisting roads that offer amazing views into the gorges below.
