Competa is one of the best known of the “white villages” in the Axarquia region inland from Malaga, mountain top communities with painted houses and narrow, winding streets. Tourists who climb to the top are not only rewarded with a view over the roofs of the houses below, but over the surrounding mountains and down to the coast. The region is also well known for the sweet wines produced on local vineyards.

One of the most impressive, and most visited, buildings in Competa is the 16th century church which can be found on the main square, the Plaza Almijara. The square also has a number of bars and restaurants where locals and tourists alike can enjoy a snack and one of Competa's 360 days of sunshine. Competa had been a failing village, with many of the young people moving away, but an influx of foreigners moving into the region and buying up empty properties has reinvigorated the area. There is a weekly market with fresh produce from local farms on sale if you are staying in self catering accommodation and want to try something different.

Like many Spanish towns and villages, residents of Competa hold many festivals and ferias throughout the year, the most famous of which is the Noche del Vino which takes place on the 15th August, in the middle of the peak tourism season. Celebrating particularly the sweet wines which are made locally to Competa, though people who prefer dry wines are catered for as well, the event includes musical performances, traditional flamenco and lots of wine tasting! Another annual festival, celebrating the town's patron saint, is held in July, usually involving a religious procession through the streets during the day, before the party starts in the evening.

There are lots of similar white village in the Axarquia region which are worth a visit too; in fact, you could make a day of visiting several of them in one go if you are driving up from the coast. Sedella is home to a Moorish tower with wall painting, while Archez is a great place to stop and buy fresh citrus fruit, picked off the tree that morning. The village of Canillas de Albaida is only a short walk from Competa and is a great place for nature lovers to spot some of the many species of birds which are native to these mountains.
