Costa Caleta is a relatively new holiday destination, which is located on the island of Fuerteventura, which is situated off the western coast of Morocco and lies east of Grand Canaria. The town of Costa Caleta can be found on the eastern side of the island in the municipality of Antigua, Las Palmas. This area of the island is home to a number of shops, cafes and restaurants and is fast becoming a popular destination for holidaymakers. In the central area of the town by the harbour is the castle, which was built in 1743 and is now one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.
There are many things to do and see here and a lot of them are family friendly activities too. There is a wide range of water-based activities to try, from windsurfing to boat trips out to see the local population of dolphins and turtles. The town also has a weekly trade fair where you can pick up some great bargains on leather goods and for those that enjoy a spot of golf there is the Championship Golf Course. There is an aquarium, Oceanarium Explorer, which offers the chance to swim with sea lions, as well as glass bottom boat rides out to sea.
There is also quad bike and cycle hire available, which is a great way to explore the town and surrounding area. The majority of the town is flat apart from Chipmunk Mountain, which isn’t strictly a mountain and takes about 15 minutes to walk into the centre of the town from the top of it. It offers some lovely views out to sea and a great place to watch the sunset.
The beaches here are very sheltered, which means that strong currents are very rare. The beaches slope gently and this means that the water tends to be shallow for at least a few meters. There are a number of children’s play areas along and close to the beach. There are also two areas that are closed off and this is to allow for safe wind surfing and snorkelling.
If you fancy a walk that doesn’t involve going up Chipmunk Mountain, then there is the path that heads towards Nuevo Horizonte. Along the route you will likely see many ground squirrels, or chipmunks, and they are so tame they will come up to you and allow you to feed them by hand.
