Welcome to our selection of holiday homes to rent in Durcal, Spain.
Located in the Lecrin Valley near the historic city of Granada, the small town of Durcal is a pleasant place to stop for a few hours and explore its narrow, winding streets, pretty houses and impressive high bridges. There are plenty of places to get a meal or a snack, and even a few small hotels and guest houses if you decide you want to stay for the night and spend more time in the surrounding region. The Lecrin Valley itself is the main reason to visit Durcal, which is also famous as the town that gave the great Spanish actress and singer Rocia Durcal her name, as it not only offers visitors the chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery, but is also home to a number of centres that offer a wide variety of outdoor and extreme sports.
Close to Durcal there are several different types of outdoor activities and even extreme sports on offer. Walking is one of the most popular activities and there are various trails of increasing difficulty available to follow, including ones that take you to the peaks of mountains such as the Cerro de Caballo or the Pico de Alcazaba. The latter is a difficult climb, but worth it for the views of the Seven Lakes gorge that you can enjoy en route to the top. You can also explore the region on horseback or on mountain bike, or take guided tours of the Lecrin Valley to learn more about the olive oil industry that used to provide most of the income before tourism.
Should you prefer something a bit more exciting, then some companies offer quad bike tours, or you can canoe down one of the two rivers in the valley; the calmer Rover Guadalfeo or the faster-flowing and more difficult River Verde. One of the most popular extreme sports takes place in Durcal itself, where you can bungee jump from one of the high bridges just outside the town.
If you are looking for interesting places near Durcal to visit, there are many villages and scenic spots in the Lecrin Valley, and a drive along the winding road that takes you along the top of the gorge is a must. Throughout the valley, you can stumble across the remains of the Roman settlements that once filled this area. Many of the modern villages are built on the site of more ancient towns, but some of the ruins are located in wilder parts of the countryside, and you would be advised to ask at the local tourist office for a map if you intend to go searching for some of the best examples near Mondujar, where archaeologists recently excavated a bath house with intact mosaic decorations.
