The small seaside resort of Llafranc is situated on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, near the town of Palafrugell and between two other popular tourist destinations, Calella de Palafrugell and Tamariu. In fact, the three resorts are so close it is possible to walk all the way from the Calella de Palafrugell in the south, through Llafranc and into Tamariu in less than two hours and without seeing much of a divide between the three resorts!
A holiday in Llafranc really does mean that you can enjoy all the facilities that the other two destinations have to offer. Unlike many parts of the Costa Brava, this stretch of coastline is quite underdeveloped, remaining unspoilt and typically Catalan. Seafood restaurants are more common than British pubs and the beaches are more likely to be small coves than huge expanses of sand.
The main beach in Llfranc is quite small, sheltered between two rocky headlands, but still has all the amenities tourists expect, such as beach bars and the prestigious Blue Flag for water cleanliness. There is a smaller beach called El Cau which is harder to access and covered with small stones, rather than sand, making it less popular with tourists and much quieter in the summer months.
The larger resort of Calella de Palafrugell to the south has a wider choice of beaches, of varying size, including the tiny but often quiet Platges de Sant Roc. Tamariu, the smallest of the three towns, may have only one sandy beach to its name, but it is one the prettiest on this stretch of coastline and well worth a visit.
The best way to appreciate the natural beauty of this stretch of coastline, with its hidden coves and high cliffs, is to take a boat trip. Several companies run day or half-day tours from Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell. The historic town of Girona is only about a half-hour drive away, while Barcelona itself is about 100 kilometres south of Llafranc. Both are well served by public transport from the resort if you haven't hired your own car.
