The seaside resort of Miami Playa is located on the Costa Dorada in Catalonia. Often referred to by its local name of Miami Platja, the small town is an ideal location for young families to visit, as it is quiet even in the summer, yet close to many of the larger towns in the region that offer all the usual tourist amenities. There is even a theme park within driving distance and the major resort of Salou is close enough for a day, or night, trip.
Miami Playa’s main attraction, as its name would suggest, is the pleasant and often quiet beach in the town. Backed by a wooded area, the clean sand slopes down gently to the water, making it safe for younger children and also providing them with some much-needed shade in the hot summer weather. The beach at Miami Playa has all the usual facilities, including toilets and showers, a snack bar and even a play area for children with trampolines, should they become bored of paddling or playing in the sand! Adults can even splash out on a bit of luxury by hiring sunbeds and parasols. Head in either direction from the main beach, and you can find smaller coves that will be even quieter, though these won’t have the same amenities and can often be quite steep to climb down to and up from.
Miami Playa has plenty of restaurants, bars and shops to keep tourists supplied, but the nearest larger town, Cambrils, also has banks, a post office and a larger supermarket. Make a day of your shopping expedition and head to the beach here or you can even take a boat trip along the Costa Dorada from the small port. Salou is around 25 minutes drive away from Miami Playa and is the place to go if you are looking for more exciting nightlife and a wider choice of restaurants. While the town has two large beaches, they are often very full on weekends and parking is almost impossible in the summer months.
The theme park Port Aventura, a short distance up the coast, is an ideal activity for slightly older children, featuring rides and live shows based on the different themes of the different areas of the park. Port Aventura is open until late and the night always finishes with a spectacular fireworks show, so it is worth staying until the very end if possible.
