Montefrio is a village in the Granada province of southern Spain. The Mediterranean climate gives Montefrio hot dry summers and mild winters. The village is built around a church atop a steep rocky pinnacle giving the village its striking appearance that dominates the skyline. The church overlooking the village is the Iglesia de la Villa is worth the climb up if only to take in the brilliant views and sense of wonder from there. The church itself was originally built on the site of a Nasrid castle after Catholic Monarchs had conquered Montefrio in 1486, the castle was demolished and the church was built. The church is currently host to a small history museum detailing the villages past conflicts, however regular church services are no longer held.
The village itself is traditionally Spanish in nature from the architecture to the people and their customs and traditions. The village is known for its sausage making and the sausages can be eaten in the local bars.
Just a few kilometres away is the Penas de los Gitanos archaeological site and although protected, anyone visiting Montefrio should also visit just to see what is open to the public. Excavations here have discovered a large number of historical artifacts from Neolithic times to the Bronze Age and even prehistoric findings too including cave dwellings and paintings.
